One of our favourite restaurants for generous food, family warmth, and a more local way to experience the South

At Palazzo Piccinno, part of our idea of hospitality is sharing the places that shape our everyday life here — not only beaches and beautiful towns, but restaurants, people, and rituals that give Salento its real texture.

Trattoria Vinhà is one of those places.

Located in the centre of Matino, just a short drive from Parabita and Palazzo Piccinno, Vinhà is one of our favourite restaurants to recommend to guests looking for authentic Salento food in a relaxed, family-run setting. We return for the generous antipasti, the handmade pasta, the easy house wine, and the warmth that can only come from a place where hospitality is simply part of life.

This is not a restaurant built around performance. It is a trattoria in the truest sense: traditional, informal, deeply local, and full of the kind of flavour and atmosphere that stay with you long after dinner.

A trattoria that feels personal

There are many good places to eat in Salento, but only a few become part of your life.

For us, Trattoria Vinhà has long been one of them. Valentina and her family welcomed us before we ever called Salento home, and over time the restaurant became more than a recommendation. It became part of our rhythm here — one of those places we return to instinctively, whether we are craving a comforting dinner, introducing someone to the area, or simply wanting to be somewhere that feels easy and familiar.

That feeling is part of what makes Vinhà so special. It is not only about what arrives on the table, though the food is consistently generous and delicious. It is also about the people behind it, and the atmosphere they create without effort.

In a region full of restaurants, Vinhà stands out for its simplicity and honesty: traditional cooking, warm service, and a room that feels lived in rather than designed.

What to eat at Trattoria Vinhà

The kitchen at Vinhà is rooted in the kind of Salento cooking that does not need reinvention. The pleasure here comes from flavour, generosity, and the confidence of recipes that have been repeated enough times to become instinct.

Antipasto misto

If it is your first time at Vinhà, start with the antipasto misto.

Like many of the best antipasti in Puglia, it arrives in waves rather than all at once: seasonal vegetables, cheeses, small bites fried or marinated, and a variety of local dishes that immediately set the tone for the evening. It is abundant without feeling heavy, and generous without ever becoming theatrical.

It is also one of the best ways to understand the restaurant’s spirit. The antipasto slows the meal down, opens the table, and invites sharing. It feels deeply tied to the southern way of eating — less about courses, more about rhythm and pleasure.

Fresh pasta

Fresh pasta is always the right choice here.

The texture gives it away immediately: handmade, slightly irregular, full of character, and impossible to confuse with something industrial. These are the kinds of pasta dishes that speak through memory rather than invention, shaped by repetition, experience, and recipes that have travelled through hands rather than books.

One of our favourites is the sausage pasta — rich, comforting, rustic in the best possible way, and full of the flavour of the countryside around us. If you are dining with friends, we always suggest ordering different pasta dishes and sharing them across the table. It is the best way to understand the rhythm of the kitchen and taste more of what makes Vinhà so loved.

House wine

The house wine deserves a place in the story too.

It is simple, light, and exactly right for this kind of dinner: the kind of wine that works with everything, asks for very little, and somehow makes the whole meal feel more complete. It pairs especially well with the antipasto and pasta, and belongs to that category of trattoria pleasures that are hard to replicate elsewhere.

Good enough to order once, easy enough to order twice.

The atmosphere

Trattoria Vinhà has the kind of atmosphere that only family-run places can create: relaxed, warm, and a little noisy in the best way. The room feels easy-going and unpretentious, with the kind of energy that comes from real dinners, real regulars, and food that people genuinely enjoy.

This is the Salento we love most. Not polished for effect, not over-explained, not trying to impress through performance. Just people who care about your experience, food shaped by tradition, and an atmosphere that invites you to stay a little longer than expected.

For guests staying at Palazzo Piccinno, this is often exactly the kind of restaurant they are hoping to find: somewhere local, traditional, and full of life, where dinner feels connected to the place rather than detached from it.

Why we recommend it to our guests

At Palazzo Piccinno, we are always interested in sharing a version of Salento that feels lived-in and real. Not simply a list of places to go, but a collection of experiences that help our guests connect more deeply with the area around them.

Vinhà is one of those experiences.

We recommend it because it offers something more than a good meal. It offers a feeling for the local rhythm of the South: long dinners, shared plates, familiar hospitality, uncomplicated flavours, and the quiet pleasure of being welcomed somewhere that makes room for you naturally.

For us, it is not simply a restaurant in Matino. It is part of our own life in Salento, and part of the world we want guests to access when they stay with us.

A dinner here reminds us why we chose this land: for its warmth, its generosity, its informality, and the way it allows ordinary moments to feel rich.

A local dinner worth making time for

If you are staying in Parabita and looking for an authentic restaurant nearby, Trattoria Vinhà Matino is one of the places we most happily suggest. It is ideal for guests who want to experience traditional Salento food in a setting that feels intimate, easy, and unmistakably local.

This is not the kind of dinner that relies on spectacle. Its charm is quieter than that. It lives in the antipasti that keep arriving, the pasta made by hand, the wine poured generously, the conversation around the room, and the feeling that the evening has found its own pace.

In that sense, Vinhà reflects something we care about deeply at Palazzo Piccinno: hospitality that feels human, rooted, and full of cultural texture.
